Pekanbaru, Indonesia – The Faculty of Economics and Business at Universitas Riau (FEB UNRI) recently held an engaging guest lecture titled "ROI, RI, and EVA for Performance Evaluation," presented by Dr. Nik Herda Nik Abdullah, a prominent academic from the Taylor’s Centre for Accountancy Studies (TCAS), Taylor’s University in Subang Jaya, Malaysia. The event, attended by students and faculty members of FEB UR, provided deep insights into three key metrics used in business performance evaluation: Return on Investment (ROI), Residual Income (RI), and Economic Value Added (EVA).
Dr. Nik Abdullah opened the session by discussing the importance of financial metrics in assessing the performance and sustainability of a company. He explained that ROI, RI, and EVA are valuable tools for measuring profitability, resource efficiency, and aligning business operations with long-term strategic goals.
In his explanation of ROI, Dr. Nik Abdullah stated that Return on Investment is a fundamental metric used to assess investment efficiency by comparing the returns generated to the capital invested. However, he also highlighted the limitations of ROI, especially in complex businesses with diverse activities.
Next, Dr. Nik Abdullah introduced Residual Income (RI), a more sophisticated metric that accounts for the cost of capital. He explained that RI provides a more accurate measure of a company’s profitability by calculating the income generated above the expected return on invested capital. This, he noted, encourages managers to make decisions that enhance shareholder value.
In the final part of the lecture, Dr. Nik Abdullah discussed Economic Value Added (EVA), a metric that integrates both operational performance and the cost of capital. He elaborated on how EVA goes beyond traditional profit measures by calculating the value a company generates for its shareholders after accounting for the cost of capital. This metric, he explained, is essential for companies aiming for long-term value creation.
Throughout the session, Dr. Nik Abdullah provided real-world examples and case studies to illustrate the practical application of these three metrics. He encouraged the audience to see how ROI, RI, and EVA can be used to make better decisions, improve profitability, and drive sustainable growth in businesses.
The event concluded with an enthusiastic Q&A session, where students and faculty members of FEB UR asked insightful questions about the application of ROI, RI, and EVA in various industries. Dr. Nik Abdullah’s expertise and practical insights left the participants with a deeper understanding of how performance evaluation plays a crucial role in business strategy.
This guest lecture was part of the Faculty of Economics and Business at Universitas Riau’s commitment to providing high-quality learning experiences and opportunities for students to engage with leading experts in the fields of accounting and finance.
